The Primo Sailing Cup 2016 in Monaco

Yachting fans in Monaco, brace yourselves: a wind blows in our direction, and with it comes the ultimate winter event of the yachting calendar. The Primo Sailing Cup is once again upon us for its 32nd annual rendition. The event, which spans over two weekends in February, will commence the international winter racing season, in which the Primo Club Trophée Credit Suisse regularly proves to be the premier event.

When is this taking place?

The competition is set to commence on 5th February, with the crane launch at 9am. The first warning signal will sound at 1:00pm for Star, SB20, Smeralda 888, Surprise, and IRC classes 1-4, followed by cocktails at 5:30pm for all participating classes. On 7th February, the first signal will sound at 11am and prizes/awards will be given after the races.

The second weekend will mirror the first. Warning signals will sound at 1:00pm on Friday for all five classes participating: J/70, Melges 20, Platu25, Longtze Premier and Diam 24. The cocktail reception will start at 5:30pm. Much like the first weekend, the last day of races will begin at 11:00am and prizes will be awarded after racing ends. A windward/leeward course will be established in the bay of Monaco.

This year, all crewmembers from the top three finishers in each class will be provided with clothing from Slam’s range of Advanced Technology Sportswear.

History of the Primo Cup

The Primo Sailing Cup has sailed from strength to strength since its’ inception in 1985. It was initially organized by HSH Prince Albert II and has certainly proved to be an everlasting and increasingly exciting event. The competition, which is hosted each year by the Yacht Club de Monaco, has become a classic event for boating aficionados, drawing 1,000 of Europe’s elite sailors to compete in the event.

Aside from vast crowds, the event also attracts an array of fine sailing and motor yachts, with yachting enthusiasts making pilgrimages across the waters to witness the excitement of the event.
