Work on the huge construction project to build luxury homes on the sea is moving forward. In November, Bouygues began construction to transform a 15-acre peninsula on the eastern edge of Monaco into luxury homes dubbed the “Formula One of flats”. Due for completion in 2025, the flats will sell for more than £75,000 per square metre, outpricing the most expensive properties in London and New York. The new Portier Cove district is being designed by the architectural firm Valode & Pistre and some apartments will be designed by London’s Shard architect, Renzo Piano.
The €2 billion project, which includes a new marina, has Prince Albert’s backing after reassurance that it will cause minimal ecological damage. The Prince promised to “pay particular attention to make sure that the project conforms to the strong environmental constraints.” Demand for properties has soared in the last decade and the new project is certainly a creative way to deal with the lack of development space in the tiny city-state. Monaco has gained 40 percent more territory by reclaiming land from the sea in the past 150 years.
