The six-hectare Mareterra eco-district has been inaugurated by H.S.H Prince Albert II, transforming Monaco’s coastline and concluding a 10-year project dubbed one of the most ambitious in Europe.
Masterminded and overseen by Valode & Pistre Architects, Mareterra has increased the size of the Principality of Monaco by 3% and offers luxury residences and refined amenities amidst lush landscaping.
Despite the vast scale of the reported $2 billion project, the development, formerly known as Portier Cove, has been completed six months ahead of schedule.
Described as “….an exceptional project, a once-in-a-lifetime project” by Denis Vaolode, co-founder of Valode et Pistre Architects, Mareterra sets a new standard for luxury, eco-friendly living in Monaco.
Here, we take an in-depth look at Monaco’s newest district, including its residences, amenities, and sustainable features.
Mareterra Residences
Marterra district offers four residences, each designed by award-winning architects. All offer refined living spaces, designer touches, and eco-friendly features to maximise the Riviera lifestyle.
Le Renzo
Le Renzo was designed and conceived by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop, an international architectural practice with offices in Paris and Genoa. Designed to represent the form of a fragmented vessel, La Renzo celebrates life in the heart of the Mediterranean and is located at the westernmost edge of Mareterra. The building sits above Marterra’s marina and retail plaza, offering a superb selection of apartments and penthouses. Many residences benefit from sweeping sea views, coupled with spacious balconies and floor-to-ceiling windows that flood each apartment with light.

Les Jardins d’Eau
Sitting next to The Renzo are Les Jardins d’Eau, a collection of four luxury residential buildings. Apartments in Les Jardins d’Eau boast generous footprints, voluminous balconies, and a superb selection of amenities, including swimming pools, fitness centres, spas, wine rooms, hair salons, and meeting rooms. Surrounded by lush gardens and mature native trees, each residence benefits from unobstructed Mediterranean Sea views.

Les Townhouses have been designed to almost disappear into the surrounding landscape, with lush Mediterranean foliage enveloping each residence and fostering a deep connection with nature. Each townhouse boasts a generous footprint, clever design solutions, and a highly private and discreet interior patio that offers the ultimate escape.

Les Villas
Finally, Mareterra includes an exclusive selection of ultra-rare villas, described as the natural heirs to Monaco’s exquisite belle epoque mansions. Each modernist waterfront villa will be unique in its design, have a private pool, and boast a carefully balanced mix of indoor and outdoor living spaces.

Luxury amenities
Beyond the private amenities that residents enjoy, Mareterra offers a superb selection of amenities for all to enjoy.
Almost half of the six-acre eco-development is reserved for open-air public spaces, including a one-hectare park planted with native Mediterranean plants and imported trees from Tuscany, Italy, a pedestrianised, seafront promenade that links Mareterra to the newly developed Larvotto Beach, and cycle paths.
Mareterra also includes a dedicated marina, shops, restaurants, and commercial spaces, creating a vibrant community on the water’s edge. The Grimaldi Forum was also expanded as part of the development, offering a new and enhanced space.
Cutting-edge sustainability
Sustainability is built into Mareterra’s DNA. Not only was the land-reclamation project very carefully monitored and regulated to minimise the impact on the surrounding environment during its build, including relocating more than 500 square metres of the protected seagrass Posidonia Oceanica, but it also boasts a raft of sustainable features to align with the Principality’s aim of reaching carbon neutrality by 2050.
According to the developers of Mareterra, 80% of cooling and heating will run on renewable energy, thanks to 1.2 acres of solar panels. Other green features include a smart irrigation system based on humidity and rainfall, smart lighting, rainwater capture systems, 200 charging spaces for electric vehicles, and batteries to store excess energy.
